Low Impact, Sustainable & Vegan Materials

Quality is a primary consideration when we are selecting materials. It is of paramount importance that the materials can be crafted without compromising on quality or craftsmanship. It is just as important that these same materials have the lowest possible impact on our planet.

The fashion industry is under enormous scrutiny and quite rightly so. The industry is responsible for 10% of the global, man-made greenhouse gases every year. This and some of the many other environmental impacts of fashion are why we take material sourcing seriously. Corn Leather

Also referred to as faux leather, synthetic leather

The innovative future leathers we use are a giant stride towards a fully sustainable alternative to leather. Rather than using 100% petroleum-based PU, the base of the materials is made with up to 45% plant content from corn. The percentage of plant content will vary for different items, but the minimum percentage is always 30%.

The corn is a non-food grade crop, so this does not divert resources necessary for food farms of animal feed. This BIO content comes entirely from a renewable source, is non-GM and is carbon neutral.

The material is chromium and PPD free.

We source the material from Italy, where it is made in a factory fully powered by photovoltaic solar energy generators, and only low environmental impact LED lighting is used throughout the company.

Cork

Natural regenerative materials

The cork used to produce our cork collection is grown and harvested in Portugal. Portugal has over 736 thousand hectares of mounted area of cork oak, a large dark green patch spreading over a vast part of country. Portugal is one of the world’s 7 largest cork producers, which also includes Spain, Algeria, Morocco, France, Tunisia and Italy.

The cork oak is a tree that has to be nurtured and cherished by successive generations. Its productive life begins once the tree is 40 years old and it has attained a girth of around 70 cm. Then a nine-year cycle of growth and harvest can be initiated. Cork trees can live for up to 500 years.

The process to produce cork bark leather is completely chemical free.

Cactus Leather

Sustainable solutions from nature

The cactus leather we use comes from Mexico. Adrián López Velarde and Marte Cázarez, aware of the environmental destruction of the leather industry, wanted to find a low impact, sustainable alternative. They hit upon using cactus because it grows abundantly in Mexico and is completely sustainable.

It takes 200 litres of water to grow one kilogram of cactus biomass, which is absorbed by the plant itself from humidity present in the atmosphere, and just 3 leaves of the plant are used to make 1 linear metre of material.

The cactus leather is made up of 30% cactus biomass together with PU in a process which uses non-toxic chemicals.

Cactus leather is an innovative vegan leather and is grown in a USDA certified organic farming system. You can read more about this material here.

Recycled Lining

Our choice of interior lining is critical to your enjoyment of our products. It is essential that our linings and supporting materials are strong and durable, but they must also look and feel beautiful.

Traditionally, leather goods brands use virgin polyester as a lining, but by using recycled rPET fabrics, made with recycled, post-consumer plastic bottles, we can significantly reduce the output of waste water, energy and CO2 and cut down on the consumption of crude oil. We are reducing our impact on the environment by not using virgin polyester.

Our lining material is manufactured in a family run Mill. They are led by sustainability and work with some of the foremost innovations in sustainable textiles and yarns. Their production system consumes less energy and gas and the fabric dying process requires 60% less water than conventional systems.

Gift Packaging

Refreshingly simple luxury

Our gift packaging has been carefully considered to reflect our ethos and brand values.

The look and feel of our gift boxes defy the very idea that they are made from recycled materials, but they are made from 100% collected wastepaper and contain recycled fibre particles. The card stock we use is bio-degradable and FSC certified and the manufacturing process is entirely free of chlorine. The boxes are then printed with vegetable-based inks.

After all, your item will still be luxurious long after the packaging is gone.
