This is the one day of the year, which is completely devoted to all the fathers, stepfathers, father figures and role models. It’s an opportunity to show our appreciation, love, and respect for all they’ve done and continue to do for us.

When was the very first Father's Day?

There are several accounts of when the first Father's Day took place. In 1908 there was a Father's Day service in Fairmont, West Virginia. The service was suggested by Grace Golden Clayton, the daughter of a minister, following the death of hundreds of men in the worst mining accident in U.S. history.

Father's Day as we know it was celebrated for the first time on 19th June 1910 in Spokane, Washington USA. In the previous year, Sonora Smart Dodd wanted an occasion to celebrate her veteran father, William Jackson Smart who had raised her and her five brothers single handed after her mother Ellen died in childbirth in 1898. Sonora was 27 at the time and a few months later she had convinced the Ministerial Association to set aside a Sunday in June. Originally, Sonora had suggested the 5th June, which was her Father's birthday, but the ministry felt they needed more time after Mother's Day (celebrated in May in the US) to prepare their sermons. They decided upon the third Sunday in June.

How the role of our fathers has changed.

The role of a father had changed significantly over the last few decades. Historically, the man of the house commanded respect, was generally the disciplinarian and this stoic attitude didn’t naturally encourage tenderness and love. These days Dads have much broader roles; actively helping to raise the children, providing hands on care, and showing love, support and understanding.

Yet in terms of consumer spending, the National Retail Federation reports that Father’s Day is less than 60% the size of Mother’s Day. Tacky low-cost gimmicky gifts still make up vast majority of items advertised for gifting on Father’s Day.

Unlike our mothers, dads aren’t craving a trip to the spa or beautiful flowers, but they are craving attention, love and a gift which is befitting for someone special.

At Watson & Wolfe, we believe Fathers really do deserve the very best. That’s why, we have curated a collection our best-selling gifts especially for this occasion and everything is delivered in a Watson & Wolfe gift box.

Planning your gift

Father's Day arguable falls at a busy time of the year. The weather in the UK is generally better, the Wedding calendar is jam packed, and you may be distracted with planning the summer. Perhaps this is why last-minute gifting is so popular and why the amount of effort and marketing around it is significantly lower than for Mother’s Day.

The busy season is precisely why we need to plan, even if that means buying a gift in May.

Making Father's Day ethical and sustainable

The world is changing, and it must if we are to protect the planet for future generations. This is why gifting long-lasting, ethically made Father's Day presents is more important than ever. One way to gift ethically and sustainably is to buy gifts which are cruelty free and vegan. Carrying a vegan wallet or wearing a vegan leather belt is no longer just about animal welfare, it's about making an ethical and sustainable choice too. The materials we use are up to 3 times more environmentally friendly than animal leather. We have chosen these particular materials for their high-quality finish and because they look and feel great. We want you to make ethical choices without compromising on quality or style.
